Assumptions
- A full year of wages at one salary, taxed as withholding rather than as a settled return.
- The federal figure applies the standard deduction for the filing status you pick. Itemising, credits and dependants are not modelled.
- Social Security stops at the yearly wage base. Medicare has no cap and includes the additional 0.9 percent above the threshold for your filing status.
- A pretax retirement contribution lowers income tax but not Social Security or Medicare, because those apply to wages.
- City, county and school district income taxes are not included anywhere on this site.
- West Virginia tax is applied to income after any pretax contribution, with no state standard deduction, exemption or credit, because the data layer does not carry them. A filed return will usually come in lower.

Income tax in West Virginia
West Virginia's five rates run from 2.11 percent up to 4.58 percent above $60,000, and the same schedule serves single and joint filers. Those figures follow a 21.25 percent across the board cut in 2023 and several trigger driven reductions since.
Because the bands are not widened for married couples, two earners filing jointly reach the top rate on a combined income a single filer would have reached alone. The state allows a personal exemption for the filer and each dependant, which is not applied before the rate here. Some municipalities charge a flat weekly city service fee on people who work there, which is not an income tax but does come out of a pay packet.
The page works a full West Virginia year out and then divides it, so a monthly figure is the annual net over twelve rather than a copy of one pay run. That matters most around $184,500 of wages, the point where Social Security stops for the year and real cheques grow. Medicare carries on at 1.45 percent to the last dollar you earn.
