Assumptions

  • A full year of wages at one salary, taxed as withholding rather than as a settled return.
  • The federal figure applies the standard deduction for the filing status you pick. Itemising, credits and dependants are not modelled.
  • Social Security stops at the yearly wage base. Medicare has no cap and includes the additional 0.9 percent above the threshold for your filing status.
  • A pretax retirement contribution lowers income tax but not Social Security or Medicare, because those apply to wages.
  • City, county and school district income taxes are not included anywhere on this site.
  • Arizona tax is applied to income after any pretax contribution, with no state standard deduction, exemption or credit, because the data layer does not carry them. A filed return will usually come in lower.

Income tax in Arizona

Arizona folded its graduated schedule into a single rate of 2.5 percent in 2023, and that rate now applies to every dollar of taxable income no matter how you file. Among states that tax income at all, it is the lowest flat rate in the country.

One consequence is that a raise here is taxed by the state at exactly the rate your first dollar was, so the marginal and average state rates never diverge. Arizona grants a standard deduction matched to the federal one, and this page does not subtract it before applying the rate, which makes the state figure above a ceiling rather than a forecast. Arizona cities raise their money through a transaction privilege tax on sales instead of taxing wages.

Set against 2.5 percent, payroll tax is the larger deduction on most Arizona salaries: 6.2 percent for Social Security until wages pass $184,500, then 1.45 percent for Medicare on every dollar with no upper limit. Above $200,000 for a single filer, or $250,000 filing jointly, Medicare takes a further 0.9 percent. Changing your filing status moves the federal bands under all of this and leaves the Arizona rate untouched.

Rates and thresholds on this page apply to 2026, with the Arizona schedule as published for 2025. Last updated .
