Assumptions
- A full year of wages at one salary, taxed as withholding rather than as a settled return.
- The federal figure applies the standard deduction for the filing status you pick. Itemising, credits and dependants are not modelled.
- Social Security stops at the yearly wage base. Medicare has no cap and includes the additional 0.9 percent above the threshold for your filing status.
- A pretax retirement contribution lowers income tax but not Social Security or Medicare, because those apply to wages.
- City, county and school district income taxes are not included anywhere on this site.
- California tax is applied to income after any pretax contribution, with no state standard deduction, exemption or credit, because the data layer does not carry them. A filed return will usually come in lower.

Income tax in California
California runs nine brackets from 1 percent up to 12.3 percent, and the last of them starts above $742,953 for a single filer. The first five bands are narrow and all sit under $73,000, so a middle income Californian passes through most of the schedule before reaching the long 9.3 percent stretch that runs all the way to $371,479.
Two California charges are absent from the numbers above. A 1 percent mental health services tax applies to taxable income over $1 million, taking the real top rate to 13.3 percent. State disability insurance is also withheld from wages at a rate the state resets each year, and since 2024 it applies with no wage ceiling. Both appear on a real California pay stub.
A pretax 401(k) entry lowers the federal and the California income tax bases together, and leaves Social Security and Medicare alone, since those are charged on wages rather than on taxable income. No California standard deduction or exemption credit is subtracted before the rate schedule runs on this page. Read the state line as an upper bound on what a return will eventually settle.
