Rates on this site are the euro reference rates the European Central Bank sets on working days, read through the Frankfurter API. They are mid market rates, so they show what a currency is worth before anyone adds a margin to it.

Assumptions
- Rates are the euro reference rates the European Central Bank publishes, read through the Frankfurter API.
- A rate between two currencies that are neither of them the euro is worked out by dividing one euro rate by the other, which is how the API derives it too.
- Every rate here is mid market. It carries no margin, no card network charge, and no transfer fee.
- Reference rates are set once each working day at about 16:00 Central European Time. Weekends and days the euro payment system is closed have no rate of their own.
- The page opens with the rate stored when the site was built, then replaces it with a live rate once the request returns. If that request fails, the stored rate stays on screen and the page names the date it belongs to.

Where these rates come from
Every working day at about 16:00 Central European Time, the European Central Bank asks the central banks of the euro system what the euro is trading at, and publishes one figure per currency. Those figures are meant for reference and accounting rather than for dealing, which is exactly what makes them useful here: they are a single public number, set at a known moment, that nobody has adjusted to earn a margin on.
The bank quotes everything against the euro, so a rate between two other currencies is worked out by dividing one euro rate by the other. A Canadian dollar to US dollar rate, for instance, is the euro price of a US dollar divided by the euro price of a Canadian dollar. The Frankfurter API performs the same division, and so does this site when a pair has no page of its own.
What you pay in practice will differ. Banks and transfer services quote a rate below mid market and keep the gap, and card networks add their own margin on top of the network rate. Comparing two providers on their advertised fees alone tends to miss that, since the larger charge usually sits in the rate. The exchange fee calculator separates the two so the total is visible.
No rate is published on a weekend, on 1 January, or on the other days the euro payment system closes. On those dates the previous working day's figure is the most recent one that exists.
