Assumptions

  • A full year of wages at one salary, taxed as withholding rather than as a settled return.
  • The federal figure applies the standard deduction for the filing status you pick. Itemising, credits and dependants are not modelled.
  • Social Security stops at the yearly wage base. Medicare has no cap and includes the additional 0.9 percent above the threshold for your filing status.
  • A pretax retirement contribution lowers income tax but not Social Security or Medicare, because those apply to wages.
  • City, county and school district income taxes are not included anywhere on this site.
  • Colorado tax is applied to income after any pretax contribution, with no state standard deduction, exemption or credit, because the data layer does not carry them. A filed return will usually come in lower.

Income tax in Colorado

Colorado charges a flat 4.4 percent on federal taxable income, so its calculation begins from a number the IRS has already produced rather than from a schedule of its own. The rate has drifted down from 4.63 percent over the past several years under the state's revenue limits.

Because the starting point is a federal figure, anything that lowers federal taxable income lowers Colorado tax with it. This page applies the state rate to income after pretax deductions, which is an approximation of that link. Colorado also refunds surplus revenue under the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights in years when collections beat the cap, sometimes as a temporary rate cut and sometimes as a cheque, and neither shows up in withholding.

Social Security stops once your wages reach $184,500, so a Colorado salary above that keeps 6.2 percent of every further dollar. Payroll delivers that as larger cheques towards the end of the year, while this page spreads the yearly total evenly across whichever frequency you choose. Medicare carries on at 1.45 percent regardless, with another 0.9 percent on wages above $200,000 for a single filer.

Rates and thresholds on this page apply to 2026, with the Colorado schedule as published for 2025. Last updated .
