Assumptions

  • A full year of wages at one salary, taxed as withholding rather than as a settled return.
  • The federal figure applies the standard deduction for the filing status you pick. Itemising, credits and dependants are not modelled.
  • Social Security stops at the yearly wage base. Medicare has no cap and includes the additional 0.9 percent above the threshold for your filing status.
  • A pretax retirement contribution lowers income tax but not Social Security or Medicare, because those apply to wages.
  • City, county and school district income taxes are not included anywhere on this site.
  • Georgia tax is applied to income after any pretax contribution, with no state standard deduction, exemption or credit, because the data layer does not carry them. A filed return will usually come in lower.

Income tax in Georgia

Georgia finished converting to a flat tax and charges 4.99 percent for 2026, replacing the six bracket schedule it used through 2023. The law lowers the rate a further tenth of a point in most years, provided the state hits its revenue targets.

Because each reduction is conditional, the rate for a future year is not settled until the state confirms it, which is why the page states the year its numbers apply to. Georgia grants both a standard deduction and a personal exemption that this calculation leaves out, so a filed return will come in under the state figure above. No Georgia county levies its own income tax.

Anything entered in the pretax 401(k) box reduces the income that both the federal ladder and the Georgia rate are applied to, while Social Security and Medicare keep working from your full wage. Federal tax is then worked out on what remains after the $16,100 single or $32,200 joint standard deduction has come off, a step the state side of this page has no equivalent for.
