Assumptions

  • A full year of wages at one salary, taxed as withholding rather than as a settled return.
  • The federal figure applies the standard deduction for the filing status you pick. Itemising, credits and dependants are not modelled.
  • Social Security stops at the yearly wage base. Medicare has no cap and includes the additional 0.9 percent above the threshold for your filing status.
  • A pretax retirement contribution lowers income tax but not Social Security or Medicare, because those apply to wages.
  • City, county and school district income taxes are not included anywhere on this site.
  • Iowa tax is applied to income after any pretax contribution, with no state standard deduction, exemption or credit, because the data layer does not carry them. A filed return will usually come in lower.

Income tax in Iowa

Iowa switched to a flat 3.8 percent in 2025, ending a graduated schedule that once reached nearly 9 percent at the top. One rate now covers every filer and every dollar of taxable income.

Iowa exempts retirement income for filers aged 55 and over, and it allows a deduction this page does not apply, so the state figure above is an upper bound on a filed return. School districts here can levy a surtax calculated as a percentage of state income tax, billed with the return rather than withheld from pay. What that surtax costs depends on the district you live in.

Two payroll taxes sit under the 3.8 percent. Social Security is 6.2 percent of wages up to $184,500 and stops there for the rest of the year. Medicare is 1.45 percent with no ceiling, and wages over $200,000 for a single filer or $250,000 for a couple filing jointly carry another 0.9 percent on top. A pretax contribution to an Iowa employer's plan reduces neither of them.
