Assumptions
- A full year of wages at one salary, taxed as withholding rather than as a settled return.
- The federal figure applies the standard deduction for the filing status you pick. Itemising, credits and dependants are not modelled.
- Social Security stops at the yearly wage base. Medicare has no cap and includes the additional 0.9 percent above the threshold for your filing status.
- A pretax retirement contribution lowers income tax but not Social Security or Medicare, because those apply to wages.
- City, county and school district income taxes are not included anywhere on this site.
- Missouri tax is applied to income after any pretax contribution, with no state standard deduction, exemption or credit, because the data layer does not carry them. A filed return will usually come in lower.

Income tax in Missouri
Missouri's eight brackets are stacked inside the first $9,191 of taxable income, in steps of roughly $1,313 apiece, so the entire schedule is crossed on a part time wage. Everything above that meets the top rate of 4.7 percent.
In practice this is a flat 4.7 percent tax with a small graduated cushion underneath it, and the state has been lowering that top rate in annual increments tied to revenue growth. Kansas City and St Louis each charge a 1 percent earnings tax on people who live or work in the city, renewed by voters every few years, and neither is included in the table.
Federal tax on a Missouri salary starts from wages less the standard deduction, $16,100 for a single filer, and only then meets the 10, 12 and 22 percent bands. The 4.7 percent state figure starts from income after your pretax contribution, with no Missouri deduction removed. The per period column is the settled year divided by the frequency you pick, so it averages out anything that reaches its yearly limit partway through.
