Assumptions

  • A full year of wages at one salary, taxed as withholding rather than as a settled return.
  • The federal figure applies the standard deduction for the filing status you pick. Itemising, credits and dependants are not modelled.
  • Social Security stops at the yearly wage base. Medicare has no cap and includes the additional 0.9 percent above the threshold for your filing status.
  • A pretax retirement contribution lowers income tax but not Social Security or Medicare, because those apply to wages.
  • City, county and school district income taxes are not included anywhere on this site.
  • Idaho tax is applied to income after any pretax contribution, with no state standard deduction, exemption or credit, because the data layer does not carry them. A filed return will usually come in lower.

Income tax in Idaho

Idaho leaves the first $4,811 of taxable income untaxed for a single filer and applies one rate of 5.3 percent to everything above it. Joint filers get double the exempt band at the same rate.

The state reached this structure by collapsing a graduated schedule in 2023 and has shaved the rate in each year since. With a single rate above the exemption, the state's share of any raise is constant, which makes Idaho withholding easy to predict from one payslip to the next. Idaho also allows the federal standard deduction, which this page does not subtract before applying the rate.

That exempt band is a separate thing from the federal standard deduction, and both are at work in the table: $16,100 comes off a single filer's wages on the federal side, and $4,811 on the state side. Nothing else is removed for Idaho here. Filing jointly doubles the state exempt band and widens every federal rate band as well, which is the larger of the two effects at most salaries.

Rates and thresholds on this page apply to 2026, with the Idaho schedule as published for 2025. Last updated .
