Assumptions

  • A full year of wages at one salary, taxed as withholding rather than as a settled return.
  • The federal figure applies the standard deduction for the filing status you pick. Itemising, credits and dependants are not modelled.
  • Social Security stops at the yearly wage base. Medicare has no cap and includes the additional 0.9 percent above the threshold for your filing status.
  • A pretax retirement contribution lowers income tax but not Social Security or Medicare, because those apply to wages.
  • City, county and school district income taxes are not included anywhere on this site.
  • Louisiana tax is applied to income after any pretax contribution, with no state standard deduction, exemption or credit, because the data layer does not carry them. A filed return will usually come in lower.

Income tax in Louisiana

Louisiana moved to a flat 3 percent in 2025, replacing a graduated schedule that topped out at 4.25 percent. The change arrived with a much larger standard deduction, and the two moves were designed to offset one another.

That deduction is not applied in the table, which makes the Louisiana figure here higher than what a return will produce, particularly on smaller salaries. The state also dropped its long standing deduction for federal income tax paid as part of the same reform. Louisiana parishes raise revenue through sales tax rather than through payroll.

Federal tax on a Louisiana salary is worked out after the federal standard deduction, $16,100 filing singly and $32,200 filing jointly, so the two income tax lines in the table start from different amounts of income. Social Security takes 6.2 percent of wages until they reach $184,500. Set a pay frequency and the page divides the finished year into equal periods, which is close to, but not the same as, what payroll withholds from any one cheque.

Rates and thresholds on this page apply to 2026, with the Louisiana schedule as published for 2025. Last updated .
